Design Process

The design process shows how we achieve the desired garden design (details are outlined below). An important aspect in the design process is to start early. Autumn or winter being a good time, allowing for ample time to get the project prepared.

Our primary aim is to understand what you want for your garden. We listen carefully to you. We aim to produce a design that fits what you imagined. It also exceeds your expectations. We do this using the process below.

Inquiry stage

1) Client brief & consultation

Our first step is to meet with the client. This helps us get to know their tastes and desires for the garden. We look at the site and establish its potential. We assess what the possibilities are for the space, whether it is a private garden or a public, community space. Site survey & Fee proposal

2) Site Survey

The next step is to survey the site. Function must come first for the garden to be successful. We establish dimensions, aspect, soil type, and sunlight. We also gain an understanding of the surrounding area to achieve a sense of the place.

  • Client questions, brief & consultation

  • Site survey and questionnaire

Design stage

3) Layout

We draw up functional layout plans from this. These plans communicate how the space can be used to its best effect. This is done before any planting or detail is set out.

4) Concept

The next stage is to clarify design ideas in writing via a client brief. We also clarify these ideas visually through a moodboard. This ensures that we are addressing the client’s needs and expectations.

At this stage ideas may evolve further as necessary.

5) Masterplan

Once the concept is agreed, a Masterplan is drawn up. This is where we get down to the details. We map out the spatial orientation. We propose a palette of hard and soft landscaping.

Technical Stage

6) Technical Specifications

Once the Masterplan is agreed then any necessary technical drawings are produced.

Sustainability is at the core of all that we do and we strive to source locally.

7) Planting Plans

Visual planting plans are produced. They are accompanied by relevant details of the plants, including name, size, colour/season, and their wildlife benefit to increase biodiversity. The plans also include quantities and costs.

8) Installation

At this point we discuss the practicalities of how to progress the design and options on our involvement.
